Romania. I am a child victim of domestic or sexual violence (if it is committed by a family member or if parents are ignorant)

01. Get help

— What should I do if I need help?

You can talk with an adult you trust, a teacher, a relative, or even a friend. Or call the police – 112 emergency telephone number.

— As a minor (under 18), can I call the police myself?

Yes, a person of any age has the right to contact the police.

— Can I represent my own interests in state bodies, courts, etc.?

Minors must be represented by one of the parents or by a state authority with competence in the child protection area.

— Will I be removed from my own family if relatives used violence?

In the event of a threat to the health or life of the child, the court may take parental rights away from the parents. Then a minor person will be sent to a relative, a foster family, or a shelter.

— Is there legislation punishing violence against children?

Usually, in such cases, Law no. 217/2003 is applied. The aggressor can be judged under articles 211-215 and 220-222 of the Criminal Code.

02. Get medical help

— As a minor, can I ask for medical help myself?

Yes. Minors receive free medical care and treatment.

— Can I represent my own interests in medical organizations??

Minors must be represented by one of the parents or by a state authority with competence in the child protection area.
